Synexus in India

It is widely accepted that India is becoming a major centre for running clinical trials with its large and diverse population and professional, western style medical system.

Synexus has had a presence in India since 2006 and is currently evaluating a number of options for the expansion of its network of Dedicated Research Centres across the sub-continent, including the preferred locations for its next stage of development there.

The importance of India in the clinical trials sector was underlined in the recent joint study by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci) and Ernst and Young which found that clinical trials in India cost 50-60 percent less than in the developed markets.

"The Indian market is growing by leaps and bounds and is gearing itself to becoming one of the fastest growing clinical research destinations with a growth rate that is two and a half times the overall market growth," the industry study said.

The fact that India has nearly 840,000 hospital beds in urban areas, over 600,000 English-speaking physicians and nearly 100,000 specialists, with many of them having been trained in the best global institutes, also adds to India's competitiveness.

India constitutes 16 percent of the global population with 20 percent of the global disease burden.
